They were tooling with them so far...
I'm afraid the extension of a country doesn't have much impact on their military capabilities. Let's have a look at few of them:
1. median age of the population: you need young and fit men and woman in order to fight. Russia median age is 40.3 years which is quite high.
2. population size: russia has approximately ~140 million population but it's shrinking, which means that every year less and less able-to-fight people are available
2. economic throughput to sustain your military campaigns: here the western sanctions will hit soon or later regardless of China.
3. natural resources (coal/oil and steel among others): Russia has plenty of those but it also rely on selling them abroad.
4. motivation to fight: Russia is a federation of states. Which means that lots of different ethnicity populates it. Soon or later, as the war fatigue will bite, the interests of those populations will diverge from russian ones.
5. and finally, land extension. Today, on its eastern and southern flanks ,russia is more vulnerable as less troops are available: an attack there might be not easily stopped.
