this is a complex topic, but too many users got banned lately. Most likely they just cant handle users alone, could give data to third-parties.

Question is if they are sending over anything suspicious or only the stuff the feds ask for

Nup. Tor + fake number, and all the setup over tor or some way of secure browser fingerprinting and IP anonymization solution.

Most of this stuff depends on your threat model, but if we are talking about feds, they can even afford setting up agreements with fake numbers providers to consume their logs + the telegram logs + your real IP, you know what's the result.

how many times have we experienced and survived the end of the world so many times have we been arrested for using various chats and forums and other forms of communication .. let each of them do their job and we will do our part

Signal is great. The feds have tried getting data from them but they are never able to provide anything besides useless info like account creation date and last active time. They do require a phone number to sign up though. Briar provides much better security and privacy but at the cost of less features

Telegram, Gab, and all these other "alternatives" that pretty much just promise not to be like the status quo are honey pots designed to keep people of real alternatives. :s

I mostly use ricochet-refresh with friends, but it doesn't run on phones.
