NAS or Local Storage

So I have generally two external drives (8TB and 4TB) with an internal SSD (1TB) and just want to know some of everyone's opinions. Would you rather buy more storage, manage a way to connect it together, or would you rather build a NAS where you can access remotely? I guess I'm curious especially with some very large data that can be shared on this site.

a NAS is very useful when working from a laptop i would recommend taking the time to set one up.

Yeah, I have a whole... wouldn't say top tier but it's generally up there in the current market PC... and an M1 Mac Pro so I tend to do a lot on both devices.

I like having a NAS at home, but I have no need to access my stuff when away from home. So I got a NAS with my stuff on it, access it from around the house on whatever computer I'm using at the time.

  1. How much was it?
  2. Any recommendations?

I don't know exactly, since I just used an old computer (it's about six years old and a even a budget build for the time).
But I did buy a couple of 12 TB  WD external drives that I shucked and used for soft raid They were on sale at the time for less than $200 USD so it was a pretty good deal. I used OpenBSD for my OS, but if I were to do it again I'd probably use something like FreeNAS or the like, meant for this purpose. I just use it for media (music, movies) and the like.

I mostly did this for fun and to learn. I don't have any good recommendations except that if you like to play around like I do and mess with old part and try different OS, using your old shit is a pretty fun way to make use of it. Otherwise, if you just want to get something up and running without the headaches there are commercially available NAS boxes that I understand are pretty easy to set up.
