I think that implementing a simple "Are you still here?" after not typing for a certain amount of time.  I'm not sure how effective it would be for countering scrapers and it could be bypassed somehow, but it would at least disrupt it for a bit.

EDIT: Possibly making this only effect VIP/default users would help, and buying a rank would make you not have to deal with the timeout.

This could probably be bypassed in 2 ways.

1. Send a random message in the shoutbox (if they are smart they should delete it quickly after they send it)
2 or just reconnect to shoutbox every couple minutes/hours to avoid getting that "Are you still here"?

idk a good way to prevent this.
perhaps if they contribute to the forum or have a % of rep then it does not affect them. perhaps allowing rep to be useful

It's a better idea if "Are you still here"? thing is for everyone and not just non-upgraded members.

It's a better idea if "Are you still here"? thing is for everyone and not just non-upgraded members.

yep. it would benefit everyone. perhaps adding a capcha or something to do to prevent automation, or at least slow it down.

All these methods can easily be bypassed by "malicious" people and would just be a nuisance to people who actually want to use the website.

As I said, scrapers would just use captcha solvers and actual users would have to do a captcha every time they log in. It wouldn't stop anyone with 2 brain cells.

Captcha Solvers? It's generally pretty hard to automate solving Captcha, unless you're mentioning someone just sitting down and doing it.
