I'm asking which one you think is more common for applications, not which one you personally prefer. Let me know your thoughts.

I’d have to say Linux, from my experience most things I’ve used run on Linux servers. But i guess it really all depends on one’s needs.

Yeah for sure, I think it's a good point of discussion really. I've heard that a lot of companies that aren't tech based use Windows Web Servers, while those more sophisticated use Linux. This isn't a good rule to determine which one, and network scans are of course more likely to show reliable information, but I think it's an interesting point.

Linux, Windows servers are a lot less common due to the licensing fee which bumps up the price

Linux buddy. You can work with any application from the command line

Linux wins. Package managing is a pain in Windows.

Linux runs the internet, everything web-based is usually made for Linux. IIS is very uncommon and is usually only used by companies that force windows on everything.

when I up web server I use NGINX on Linux and I am satisfied

As lord_x mentioned, Linux with NGINX is a great go to from a security and efficiency standpoint. Companies that I've seen use windows based environments for websites typically are either chained at the needs to .asp (not an issue these days in Linux) or they simply have lazy admins that want a damn gui for everything.

Windows server licensing fees will hit you HARD and in the long run, just add unnecessary costs to deployment.
