Is it really common to know a programming language?

Friends around me seemed to know at least one of the it. We are teens btw. Knowing a programming language is not an addition, but a requirement now?

I presume youre talking about in the context of security/hacking. And no, while its not a requirement per say is still highly recommended. The problem with not learning how is you will always be limited to what tools are made for you, and its a lot harder to gain insights into various flaws outside of rote repetition.

Can you succeed? Sure. Theres infosec professionals that dont know any programming and just learn standard pentesting tools really well, or they go all in on social engineering or even physical security assessments. Then on the criminal side, there will always be carders and skids that just wheel and deal access to sensitive information and then use that to turn a profit. Being someone that knows how to cash out something of illicit value will always be successful person when it comes to anything crime related.

But those folks will always have a ceiling. A limit to their abilities they will never eclipse. The infosec pro always pigeonhold into being the face person, or forever a scan grunt in the team. The skid always laughed at, only scraping by feeding off the scraps of others.

And learning how to program is the most effective way to escape these barriers.

Yes, i think its a must for now. Just knowing the basic of programming or logic is better

I would also recommend to have at least a general understanding of programming, since it also helps to understand software, networks etc. better, probably needed for hacking ;)

depends, if ur talking abt shit like "print ("Hello, World!")" or basic "if" "while true/false" or just small console scripts then yes, if you are talking about making applications with like good design, or making good games in any game engine (except scratch  :s ) then no.

Nowadays i would say yes, it will be even more common in the future as young kids will be taught how to code in school.

Depends on what you mean by know. I can write a basic "hello world" program in most programming languages, but that doesn't mean I know that particular language, does it?

I don't really think you can "know" a programming language. There's always more to learn, so in my mind, no one's ever done with learning a language. Sure, more people can program, but there's a big gap between those who "know" how to do it well, and those who just "know".

It is just a plus point but not a requirement in any sense, if you want to learn it, do so but if you do not, It will not effect you negatively.

Seems like you feel peer pressure.

Programming is just writing down logic for me, most have hard time to do that.
Those who share kindness, I will repay that payment 10-fold, and Who do injustice, try to hurt the innocent, I will repay that injustice a 1000 times over.

clearly this will bring a new way of looking at things, i believe it is essential at least the basics of programming and if you like it you can make a career out of it
