It feels like you answered your own question here. People like to pigeon hole themselves into something specific and then companies pay them for it. That often doesn't translate well into real-world experience which then translates to a lack of real-world skill. Everyone likes to think they can do everything. I've known people who thought they would be amazing drug sellers because they watched too much TV, but that doesn't mean their finance degree translates into this activity.
