I doubt their systems were hacked, sounds more like the backlash from the Krebs article and their realization of government attention. Their service was made by criminals, for criminals; easier for them to make up a lie, close up shop and project blame.
I highly doubt we'll ever see any database, unless it's from the owners themselves releasing the user database pretending to be the actors.

I thought they were 1000% lying by claiming that they got hacked at first but when I took closer look, the "surgemail" part of their explanation actually makes (at least a bit) sense.
