Linux is definitely the better choice in my opinion. You have much more freedom with Linux since you can pretty much configure it how you want to. Linux is a very lightweight OS so it can even be used with low spec machines. Apple is just going to keep increasing the price of Macs.

I would say defenitly Linux since Linux is way more changable and there isn't just one Linux but tousends of Linux system so you defenitly will find an Linux system that is better than a mac.
