I vouch this, one user could just create an account to share interesting content (PDF, link...), and just don't giving a f* about commenting/staying on the forum.

What is the main issue about inactive accounts ? Do they take that much space on the database ? I'm not a DB engineer, but text & few PP might not be very disk consuming.

Posts wouldn’t be deleted made by the user

It doesn’t take up much space, it would be done to lessen the amount of data we keep on users

This is a good idea because inactive accounts could be compromised and used for scamming, but if you won't purge users with ranks, at least require them to confirm their email again after ~2 years or find another way of confirming it's the same person

definitely need this cause it would act like a killswitch if something goes wrong

Hi,

Deleting inactive accounts can have several prisms. On the one hand it is good to keep the site updated and on the other hand, in the case of temporary or inactive emails the user may have decided to do so to avoid spam, security breaches or any other reason. So to satisfy those of both positions a serious option (which has been seen in other forums of playful type) is to send 3 messages in the profile: The first, warning that the account has been unused for some time (say 1 year). The second, after a year, saying that you have 1 month to access the account before being deleted by the administrator. The third message, we regret to inform you that your account will be deleted for inactivity and security since it has been unused for more than 1 year and 1 month.

Would obviously not purge users with GOD // MVP // VIP, however I could add a setting for them to toggle it if they wish so if they don't login for an x amount of months their account gets deleted.

I'd agree with the setting toggle. I have a few suggestions in addition to this:

  • When an account does get purged, let MyBB send an email to the user's attached email address that they have x amount of time to get their account back before its permanently purged
  • For posts made by "permanently purged" accounts, have its authorship assigned to a "ghost" account (this is what GitHub does with issues/pull request comments made by deleted accounts) or have it as a toggle in which if a user does get deleted their posts gets deleted along with their account.

they should still be there but under the name "deleted"

Great idea, hope the account deletion for upgraded users is not on by default, but otherwise a super good thing.
