is it possible to break 256-bit encryption? 
Your answer will most likely be no, but I wanted to ask anyway because I want to be absolutely sure.

I will not answer your question, instead, I will give you some information. The FBI allows files up to "Top Secret" to be encrypted with AES 256. Do with that what you want.

Depends on the quality of the algo and the quality of the key.

If algo is good: don't even try. If the algo is bad: exploits will be developed.

If the key is good (true random): don't even try. If the key is bad (bad random, bad seed): figure out the weakness and exploit it by only trying those weak keys.
