When the universe was created, it didn't have anything to understand itself, so life then was created (via accident OR intent) and now the universe can walk back on itself as we gather knowledge about it.

Interestingly I read the redacted scripts from Prometheus (The 'Alien' prequel) and it turns out, the whole point of the Engineers destroying earth was vengeance coz THEY were the ones who sent Jesus and because we killed him even though he was the envoy of peace, they wanted to kill all humanity for blowing its chance to transcend.
