Was wondering, how pro infect lot of machines through shodan? yeah, through exploiting vulns, but i mean which are the most exploited vulnerability out there? better to focus on old machines or newer if i would build a botnet?

Depends on what all vulnerabilities are found on the machines you are searching for and the exploit that is availble to exploit it and how sucessful is that exploit, the more common the vulnerability, the higher chances of it being patched or for AVs to pick up on the exploit being attempted on it

It is necessary to study various vulnerabilities and exploits in the public domain (they are most often used), then you can understand which machine is easier to hack

If you're gonna actually use it to build a botnet you're probably gonna need a subscription for search filters and api access. You could also just scan yourself using massscan + nmap for example, just pick an exploit you can easily search for beforehand
