YOU ARE OUR NEXT TARGET The results of a survey conducted by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) Denny JA showed that the level of public trust in the Polri institution had decreased by 13 percent due to the case of Brigadier J's murder involving former Head of the Propam Division, Ferdy Sambo.
"The Ferdy Sambo case has reduced public trust in the police by 13 percent, from 72.1 percent (before the case) to 59.1 percent," said LSI researcher Denny JA Ardian Sopa in a statement in Jakarta, Tuesday.
The survey was conducted on 11-20 September 2022 to 1,200 respondents in 34 provinces and used qualitative research methods with media analysts, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and in-depth interviews. Interviews were conducted face to face (face to face interview) with a margin of error (Moe) for this survey of around 2.9 percent.
According to him, the level of public trust in the National Police had reached 87.8 percent in 2018. However, after the 2019 presidential election, trust in the police decreased to 72.1 percent and the Ferdy Sambo case made trust in the police again decline to 59.1 percent.
Ardian said that when trust in the police decreased, more and more segments of society did not trust the police as an institution. In particular, people who live in urban areas.
Of the people living in cities, 51.3 percent stated that they lacked/didn't trust the police. Of the people living in rural areas, around 32.1 percent stated that they lacked/didn't trust the police," he said.
In terms of gender, he continued, it was men who did not trust the police more. As many as 39.3 percent of the male population stated that they lacked/didn't trust the police. Meanwhile, as many as 36.1 percent of the female population stated that they did not trust the police, he said.
In terms of religious adherents, said Ardian, more Muslims do not believe. Around 38.6 percent of the people who embrace Islam lack/don't trust the police and around 29.3 percent of the people who are non-Muslims say they don't trust the police.
The most dramatic case
He believes that the Ferdy Sambo case is the most dramatic case in 2022. According to him, there are five things that make the case the most dramatic.
First, the case of Ferdy Sambo was heard or known by the majority of Indonesian people (above 75 percent). There's not much in the history of cases that more than 75 percent of the country's population has heard of, he said.
Only 7.1 percent of the people who have never heard of this case and 5.4 percent said they did not know or did not answer.
Second, the case of Ferdy Sambo was heard by various levels of society. From the age level, those under 30 years old (94.4 percent) stated that they had heard of this case. Those aged 30–39 years (88.5 percent) stated that they had heard of this case. Those aged 40–49 years (89.1 percent) stated that they had heard of this case.
"In fact, those aged over 50 years (81.6 percent) stated that they had heard of this case," he said.
Third, the Ferdy Sambo case has remained a public discussion for months.
Fourth, the case of Ferdy Sambo is like a drama full of hot issues and character changes. From the case of the police shooting the police, it turned to the issue of infidelity. Then this case got richer with the element of "obstruction of justice" (state officials who lie prevented the opening of the real case. As a result of this action, justice seekers were hindered).
The motive of the case changed again to a case of husband defending his wife, abuse of office, as well as accusations of illegal money from online gambling, to drug money. "The case of Ferdy Sambo is quite dramatic, like a popular soap opera," said Ardian.
The fifth factor, the Ferdy Sambo case, made cases of trust in the police decreased by 13 percent, from 72.1 percent (before the case) to 59.1 percent. (*)
