Hello, good morning (or evening, depending where you are and when you are reading this),

Hope you're having a good day, Sirs / Madams

I'm curious, in this current technological day and age, considering the plethora of information available in the internet, what is the minimum that a commoner such as myself should at least know how to do to navigate ourselves safely in this increasingly digital world?

Asking programmers / hackers / IT specialists

Thank you for your attention / ideas

basic knowledge of IT is never bad..I would start with network / internet basics, afterwards deep dive depening on your favorite type of end device, some scripting/programming is fine as well

I think you need to know where and how to gain the information first, but its gonna be easy for now as we already have internet with several search engine and a lot of information available on internet

also you do need to understand on how things works because that "minimum" gonna changes (even not much) each time when a new tech coming
no need to be so technical just like with what kind of devices did you have right now, you learn how to use it and understand how the device is operating
you know how to use apps and even getting used to the interfaces does help you in the near future

dont forget that desire to seek things as that will gives u the experience
the information is already out there somewhere its all up to what are u gonna do with it

agreed with trollinator321, u need that basic first
you want to be programmer? go find what programmer is, find what you need to know before making a program etc

Well if you just want the basics it's simple:

  • It doesn't really matter if someone has your IP, every website you visit knows it.
  • Don't use weak passwords.
  • NEVER use the same password for multiple sites, for sites you don't care about people getting access to it's ok to use a base password with modifications but don't do it for anything you care enough about to know the url off the top of your head.
  • Most importantly: don't be stupid. If something seems weird take some time to check it out and make sure nothings wrong, It'll be well worth it when you find something that could cause trouble.

to extent...
- use a password manager
- use 2FA/MFA whereever possible (2nd factor, multi-factor auth), maybe checkout FIDO

Become obsessed with the area you want to go into. I don't want to hear about "what I need to do" or "how do I become this" you have to LOVE the subject and want to learn yourself instead of feeling you need to know and gain motivation from others. If you want to hack, what area? Look up the different types of hacking and find the one that you like the most and learn that. They will link together anyway but you are actively learning the things that you WANT to rather than what you feel you NEED to.

That's the theory side of delving into it by reading free online pdfs (pdfdrive.com is a good source) but as for a more practical approach I would say to start super small and then work up and if the jump is too big to look at an example on this forum and then adapt it to the task you are doing. I don't want to go into too much detail but if you have any questions then please ask away.
