I won't give you a step by step guide, but the way I learned and had a lot of success with was hackthebox

I signed up, without knowing nothing about hacking. Started testing and reading peoples walkthroughs and I learned how to hack. Soon started doing them on my own without needing to read walkthroughs

THe more advanced stuff came when there were no walk throughs for stuff, I learned all that but trial and error.

There are some points that you should at least know the basics of them. The following are the points that you should know:

• Know the basic of penetration testing itself.
• Know the basic of web application
• Know the basic of network
• Know the basic of operating system
• Know the basic of programming
• Know the basic of database
• Know the basic of cryptography
• Know the basic of reverse engineering
• Know the basic of forensics
• Know the basic of mobile application

Honestly I think the best thing you can do to become a skilled hacker is to first learnt he underlying technologies that are commonly exploited. For example, learn Windows and linux system administration; learn networking; learn to code and learn SQL. Knowing these things will take you much further down the road of becoming a hacker than reading a penetration testing book or installing Kali Linux. With that said, knowing tech isn't enough; you still obviously need to learn the hacking side of things. Once you're competent with the mentioned subjects, then start reading books and taking courses on penetration testing. But if you just delve into hacking right off the bat, things won't make sense, and you won't be anything more than a script kiddie.
