Back in the 70's where people were a little less desensitized to this kinda horror, obviously scared the shit out of them. But The Exorcist does dabble in the best deliverance of horror; the implication of bad, its suggestion, as well as it's image. I always think that horror will always jump the shark when it reveals it's antagonist without filter. There was a series called Archive 81, that right up until the 'monster' was revealed, it had this real tangible sense of dread that was implied and never overtly revealed to the audience, that suspension of disbelief challenges the brain to fill in it's own gaps and make the horror a little more personal and effective. A great horror series, in fact 1 of the best ones ive seen in probably ever is Midnight Mass, which deals with Catholicism in a very unique way.
