The OTR plugin on Gajim is only available for pre-1.0 versions. Plugins are written in Python 3 since Gajim 1.0, and the OTR plugin was never ported, because most people dislike 1.0 and older anyway.

And to answer OP: Gajim, Psi+, or Profanity (TUI) as a client, self-hosted service to communicate with close peers. Tox for everything else, I use the Toxic client.

I use dino.im.

though it's very old fashioned. But I still use pidgin all the time.
