i am not sure what you mean with "dont look like they are for girls like me ...", but anyway, i would recommend to use ubuntu.
at the beginning, i wouldn't recommend to use arch, gentoo or other more experienced distributions, because it'll takes some time to get in touch with linux, especially with all the different shell commands. therefore a distribution with a large community like ubuntu will help you better to solve issues, if you experience some... (the best way to learn linux is, to force your self using the command line instead of some shine graphic tools...)
the easiest way is to install ubuntu using some virtual machine environments (virtual box etc.). choosing this way keeps you able to use your known OS (like MacOS) to search for advises or tutorials.
(p.s. on ubuntu you should be able to install all nice tools, which are provided by kali linux as well.)
