If you really want to see what Anime/Manga can do Read Berserk and watch the 1997 Anime Adaptation of Berserk. Probably some of the best Art to come out of Japan in the last 100 years.

You should try Code Geass and Steins Gate. If you hate to be left hanging, NEVER EVER watch nor read Hunter X Hunter. With the manga current pace, the manga or anime will not ever finish because of hiatus!
